Government of Nepal Sets January 25 for National Assembly Election


Kathmandu: The government has announced that the election for the vacant seats in the National Assembly will be held on January 25, 2026, which falls on a Sunday. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting and was communicated by the Spokesperson of the Government of Nepal and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Minister Kharel, also resulted in four additional decisions. Notably, the government resolved to terminate the double taxation agreement between Nepal and Mauritius. Furthermore, there will be an amendment to Schedule 2 of the Act on the Remuneration and Benefits of Federal Parliament Officials and Members, 2073, along with a reduction in the number of posts in their personal secretariat.



Minister Kharel also provided details on the approval of the Regulations Related to Press and Publications, 2082 (second amendment). He mentioned that the provisions concerning online registration and renewal will become effective once published in the Nepal Gazette.



In another significant decision, the Cabinet approved President Ramchandra Paudel’s official visit to Doha, Qatar. The visit is scheduled for November 3 to 6, where he will participate in the ‘Second World Summit for Social Development.’
