Discussion on Granting Voting Rights to Nepalis Living Abroad


Kathmandu: The Ministry of Home Affairs and Policy Research Institute have held discussions on granting voting rights to Nepali citizens living abroad. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rameshwor Dangal, Joint Secretary of the Law Division under the Ministry, and Executive Chair of the Institute Prof Dr Lekhnath Sharma and Dr Deepak Khadka.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the meeting explored the possibility of voting from abroad, including voter rolls, the voting process, and the necessary mechanisms, laws, and other requirements to make this initiative feasible. The Ministry of Home Affairs invited the Institute for preliminary discussions on the current legal situation regarding overseas voting, implementation experiences from other countries, and the challenges involved.



Home Minister Aryal’s secretariat highlighted that discussions also covered the voting process abroad, potential security challenges, required human resources, and the political environment needed for its implementation.
