Kathmandu: The legal practitioners and intellectuals have emphasized the necessity of restoring the House of Representatives (HoR) if elections are not conducted as scheduled on March 5.
According to National News Agency Nepal, during an interaction organized by the Democratic Thoughts Society, speakers urged political parties to commit to the election once the conditions are conducive. They stressed that prolonged indecision and political instability should be avoided if the election timeline is not adhered to.
The speakers highlighted the unprecedented uprising led by Gen Z youths last September, which resulted in significant losses. They called for accountability for those involved in the violence and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the infiltration of the Gen Z protest, which caused extensive damage.
Senior advocates Harihar Dahal and Upendra Keshari Neupane underscored that holding the HoR election should be a top priority. They asserted that if elections are deferred, reinstating the HoR is essential.
Dr. Kedar Narsing KC, former Chairman of the Society, noted that the government has yet to create a conducive environment for elections, emphasizing the importance of establishing peace and security and gaining political trust.
Kul Chandra Wagle, the Society’s Chairman, expressed concern over the democracy achieved through significant struggle and sacrifice. He called for unity among Nepalis to foster trust and resolve political crises.
Chairman of Nepal Medical Association, Dr. Anil Karki, and Chairman of Democratic Lawyers’ Association, Sitaram KC, also questioned the political parties’ reluctance to hold elections, citing security concerns.
