Kathmandu: A General Secretary and a Joint Secretary of the Nepali Congress have presented two separate proposals for the party’s general convention.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the time schedule for the general convention has not reached a consensus, with differing approaches presented by party leaders. General Secretary Gagan Thapa proposed holding the general convention from December 31, 2025, to January 1, 2026. In contrast, Joint General Secretary Mahendra Yadav suggested a schedule from May 10, 2026, to May 13, 2026. Efforts are ongoing to reach an agreement.
Badri Pande, Joint General Secretary, highlighted that if the general convention is conducted on December 31, intense preparation would be necessary. Thapa’s proposal outlines a series of conventions leading up to the central general convention, starting with ward conventions on December 13, 2025, constituency conventions on December 20-21, and culminating in the central event at the end of the month.
Yadav’s schedule suggests a different timeline, beginning with ward conventions on March 15 and progressing through various stages, including palika and district conventions, before the central general convention in May 2026.
Pande emphasized the importance of regular general conventions to meet demands for special conventions. Joint General Secretary Kishor Singh Rathaur stressed the need for party unity, given the country’s current challenges. He anticipates that the central committee meeting will approve the convention schedule following the March 5 election to the House of Representatives.
Central member Nainsingh Mahar underscored the necessity for party leadership to address various opinions and gain trust from other political parties during these challenging times. He advocated for adherence to the party statute, which legitimizes a special convention, emphasizing the importance of adopting a democratic system within the party.
