Kathmandu: Police have arrested one of the defendants in a case relating to the fake Bhutanese refugee scam and presented him before the court.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the arrested individual is Rajan Kumar Kharel, 42, from Phatuha Harsah-9, Rautahat, in Madhesh Province. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has been instrumental in apprehending Kharel, who is implicated in the scam that involves collecting and transferring money through cash and cheques, committing fraud, forging documents, and conspiring with accomplices to swindle victims.
CIB spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police, Shiva Kumar Shrestha, revealed that Kharel’s activities were central to the fraudulent operations. Acting on a special tip-off, the police were able to detain him and subsequently present him before the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday to advance further investigation.
Kharel was already facing a charge sheet at the Kathmandu Police Range dating back to the fiscal year 2079-80 BS, accused of fraud, forgery, organized crime, and crimes against the State. He had managed to evade capture and remained at large until his recent arrest.
