Parsa: As many as 1,697 cases of extortionate money lending have been settled through mediation in Parsa district. Spokesperson at the District Police Office, Hari Bahadur Basnet, informed that a total of 2,367 cases of extortionate money lending were registered in the district. Among these, 635 cases are yet to be settled.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Secretary of the Farmers Struggle Committee against Usury, Shambhu Prasad Yadav, stated that the trend of exploiting people with tampered loan documents and excessive interest rates is yet to be eradicated. He emphasized that real victims of usury are still awaiting justice.
Kanaiya Prasad Yadav from Pokhariya municipality shared his experience, revealing that a local influential figure, Jogindar Raut Kurmi, compelled him to sign a document for a loan of Rs 330,000, whereas the actual loan was only Rs 110,000. He urged the government to implement stringent measures to curb such activities.
Spokesperson Basnet further added that through the conciliation process, Rs 291 million was recovered in cash, and over 40 bighas of land were reclaimed from the practice of extortionate money lending in the district.
