Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has urged the Election Commission (EC) to extend the deadline for voter registration due to the increased enthusiasm and pressure observed in the voter registration process.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Karki communicated her request via a phone call with the Officiating Chief Election Commissioner, Ram Prasad Bhandari. The PM’s secretariat confirmed her appeal for an extension, highlighting the need for additional time to accommodate the surge in registrations.
The Election Commission had initially set November 30 as the final date for voter registration. In response to Prime Minister Karki’s request, Officiating Chief Commissioner Bhandari indicated a positive reception towards extending the deadline by an additional five days.
The demand for online voter registration has been notably high since it became possible for individuals to register using the details from their national identity cards. Additionally, Prime Minister Karki expressed concerns to the Election Commission about issues related to the ‘internet server’ that could affect the registration process.
