Lalitpur: The 17th National Human Rights Convention is set to begin on Monday, aiming to localize the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and enhance accountability from the government and relevant authorities. The event, spanning a week, seeks to address key issues such as democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and intergenerational justice.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Single Women Group, operating under Women for Human Rights, is coordinating the event. During a press conference at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Lalitpur on Sunday, it was announced that the convention, scheduled from December 8 to 15, will focus on these critical themes. Shobha BC, convention coordinator and president of the Single Women Group, revealed that 125 human rights organizations nationwide would participate in the event, which Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal is set to inaugurate.
NHRC Secretary Murari Prasad Kharel emphasized the importance of Gen Z’s involvement in this year’s convention. He highlighted that participants would receive training on nonviolent activism, advocating for social change through peaceful means rather than force. Kharel expressed hope that the convention would contribute to the effective conclusion of the transitional justice process.
Human rights activist Charan Prasai underscored the significance of involving young people in policy-making and fostering accountability among them through such events. The organizers have prioritized sessions on intergenerational dialogue, human rights awareness, and peaceful civic engagement, addressing the recent rise in human rights violations during youth-led movements.
