Kapilvastu: Vice-Chair of the National Assembly Bimala Ghimire has raised concerns over the rise of ‘digital’ violence as a significant challenge for women who are already facing gender-based violence. In her address at the event ‘Interaction on the Proper Use of Digital Technology,’ held by Badganga Municipality in Kapilvastu, she emphasized the increasing problem of improper use of information technology, which is forcing young women, sexual minorities, and vulnerable communities to confront new forms of violence.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Vice Chair Ghimire highlighted the reluctance of young women to express their opinions on social media platforms due to the prevalence of hostile comments, harassment, and disrespectful responses. She remarked on the profound impact that digital violence has on individuals’ mental well-being, social engagement, self-esteem, career prospects, and leadership skills.
She further warned of the potential emergence of new forms of violence with the ongoing evolution of digital technology, which could lead to character defamation against women, female leaders, journalists, public officials, and other prominent figures. Vice Chair Ghimire stressed the importance of recognizing and addressing these issues promptly to mitigate their impact on affected individuals and communities.
