Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has urged for cooperation from all sectors to ensure the timely execution of elections for the House of Representatives (HoR) members. She emphasized the importance of completing the electoral process within the stipulated timeframe.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Karki outlined the government’s priorities which include the formulation of laws for the protection of human rights defenders, ensuring safe and dignified foreign employment, and the preparation and implementation of the sixth human rights plan of action. In her message on the occasion of the 77th International Human Rights Day, PM Karki affirmed the government’s commitment to combat corruption and maintain good governance.
The Prime Minister highlighted that human rights protection is contingent upon transparency and accountability, and asserted that the government is firmly advancing on this path. She underscored the significance of free and fair elections as the essence of democracy and stated the government’s dedication to creating an environment where citizens can elect their representatives without fear, greed, or pressure. The upcoming March 5 election aims to be more cost-effective, transparent, and technologically advanced.
PM Karki also expressed confidence in providing a conducive atmosphere for security personnel involved in the election, ensuring they perform their duties with confidence. She urged political parties to participate in the elections peacefully, respecting the voting rights of eligible Nepali citizens and promoting human rights to make the democratic exercise successful.
Addressing issues related to Nepal’s peace process, the Prime Minister acknowledged the unfinished business of transitional justice and reassured that the government is committed to addressing these issues comprehensively. The government aims to complete the transitional justice process by centering on victims and adhering to prevailing laws and consensus.
PM Karki reiterated the importance of the national human rights commission’s autonomy and effectiveness as a democratic watchdog and promised to implement its recommendations. She assured enhancements in the commission’s institutional and physical infrastructure, human resources, and budget management.
On the topic of climate change, PM Karki identified it as a significant challenge to human rights protection, noting Nepal’s vulnerability despite minimal carbon emissions. She highlighted the severe impacts of climate change on various aspects of life and affirmed the government’s proactive steps in fostering national and international partnerships for adaptation, risk reduction, sustainable development, and climate justice.
The Prime Minister concluded by stressing the government’s commitment to sustainable development goals, focusing on poverty reduction, gender equality, social justice, inclusivity, peace, and prosperity. She emphasized that human rights should transcend legal frameworks and become ingrained in social behavior, asserting that sustainable peace, development, and prosperity can only be achieved through collective action to integrate human rights into daily culture.
