Let’s Talk Candidly on Mental Health, Reiterates Health Secretary


Kathmandu: Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr. Bikash Devkota, has emphasized that mental health problems should not be viewed as a weakness, noting that they can be treated fully like any other physical diseases. In a video message released as part of the government’s ‘mental health awareness’ initiative, Dr. Devkota highlighted the importance of mental health in maintaining a healthy life, comparable to physical health. He urged the public to avoid discriminating against individuals with mental health issues and instead provide them with special care.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Dr. Devkota stressed the need for active participation from all three levels of government to ensure the effectiveness of this campaign. He called on everyone to speak openly, listen attentively, and engage actively in the campaign. This mental health awareness campaign, initiated by the Ministry of Health and Population, runs from December 10 to March 14. It aims to promote access to mental health services by integrating them into basic health services for citizens.



The Ministry revealed that one in ten Nepalis are living with some form of mental health problem, and on average, 19 individuals commit suicide daily. The Ministry also encouraged people not to hesitate to discuss their stress and struggles with trusted individuals and colleagues, and to consult doctors in case of emergencies.
