Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that Nepal, as a proud and active member of the United Nations, highly values the world body. PM Karki made these remarks at a programme organized to celebrate 70 years of Nepal’s partnership with the United Nations.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the United Nations office in Nepal for organizing the event, emphasizing the crucial role the UN has played in maintaining world peace, supporting growth, and helping build a better future for Nepal. She acknowledged the longstanding support from the UN in improving the lives of Nepalese citizens and expressed appreciation for their continued collaboration.
The 70-year milestone serves as a moment to reflect on the journey and strengthen the partnership for future endeavors, PM Karki noted. She highlighted the UN’s founding purpose post-World War II to prevent future conflicts and its focus on peace, human rights, and development, which have yielded significant results in health, safety, and humanitarian assistance.
The Prime Minister underscored the growing expectations from the UN amidst new global challenges such as climate change and international tensions, urging collective efforts to fortify the UN system. She reiterated Nepal’s active participation and belief in the UN as a critical platform for international dialogue and conflict resolution.
PM Karki emphasized Nepal’s adherence to the principles of the UN Charter since joining on 14 December 1955, describing it as the foundation of the country’s international relations. She proudly noted Nepal’s status as the top contributor of troops to UN Peace Support Operations and expressed readiness to continue supporting global peace initiatives.
Announcing an important national update, PM Karki assured that the upcoming elections on March 5 would proceed smoothly, with preparations nearly complete and security conditions improved. She also highlighted Nepal’s progress towards graduating from a ‘Least Developed Country’ by 2026, calling for further investment, technology, and UN partnership to sustain this advancement.
