All Sides Need to Abide by Paris Agreement: President Paudel

Kathmandu: President Ramchandra Paudel has emphasized the necessity for all parties to adhere to the commitments outlined in the Paris Agreement regarding climate change and the measures required to limit the global temperature rise. He made these remarks during the inauguration of a conference of parliamentarians from the Hindu Kush region.

According to National News Agency Nepal, President Paudel called upon all nations-regardless of their development status, wealth, or industrial capacity-to adhere to the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. He voiced concern over the recent temperature increases in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, which have been exacerbated by rapid snowmelt, leading to downstream flooding and erosion.

President Paudel stated that climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution are no longer just topics in scientific reports but have become pressing realities impacting daily life. He described the conference as a historic opportunity to develop a roadmap for a common and sustainable future. He also highlighted the importance of making a firm commitment to the future of the geography, mountains, forests, rivers, and environment of the Hindu Kush Himalaya, noting that more than 2 billion people rely on the water from this region.

The President stressed that the region’s rich biodiversity is crucial to maintaining ecosystem balance and warned that its loss could severely affect food, culture, and the economy. He expressed gratitude to the Hindu Kush member countries for their ongoing efforts to combat climate change, reduce air pollution, and protect biodiversity.

In his speech, President Paudel outlined Nepal’s significant initiatives, including early warning systems for climate-related disasters, hydropower development collaboration, solar power promotion, and participatory community forest conservation. He also mentioned efforts to expand reserve areas, monitor wildlife, improve public transport, promote electric vehicles, and reduce industrial emissions.

However, President Paudel acknowledged that there is still a need for effective policies to enhance climate adaptation and resilience. He expressed hope that the conference would institutionalize parliamentary dialogue and promote sustainable cooperation to address common challenges.
