Kathmandu: An organization, Biocomp Nepal, has collected 143.55 metric tonnes of waste after cleaning 16 rivers and rivulets in the Kathmandu Valley. The waste was collected through a partnership of organizations-‘People in Need’ and ‘Clean Up Nepal’.
According to National News Agency Nepal, this initiative was made possible with the active participation of more than 100 volunteers, members of local communities, Nepal Police, and students from different educational institutions. The river clean-up campaign was launched under the ‘River Plus Project’, which aims to collect low-quality plastics and recycle them. The project targets reducing plastic pollution, particularly in the Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Manohara rivers.
At a programme organized today, Chief Executive Officer of Biocomp Nepal, Maarten Nijhof, shared that the low-quality plastics were collected from houses, industries, rivers, roads, and garbage disposal centers. The collected plastics will be transported to the zero-emission plastic recycle plant recently established at the Special Economic Zone in Siraha, where they will be recycled into plastic composite boards. Under the campaign, Biocomp Nepal collected 80 metric tonnes of low-quality plastic and successfully recycled it.
