Birgunj’s Iconic Ghanta Ghar Gets a Facelift After Partial Collapse

Birgunj: The iconic clock tower of Birgunj in Parsa, known as the Ghanta Ghar, has been repaired following partial damage that occurred seven months ago. The tower, a significant historical structure, had suffered a collapse of its ‘balcony’ structure due to deterioration.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Birgunj Metropolitan City undertook the responsibility of reconstructing the damaged parts of the tower. The restoration process included repainting the structure to restore its original appearance. Prabhat Jha, head of the Land Management and Urban Development Department of Birgunj Metropolitan City, confirmed the successful repair of the tower’s damaged sections.

Jha noted that traditional methods were employed during the repair process due to the impracticality of using machinery on the historic monument. He explained that the manual repair approach was time-consuming but necessary to preserve the tower’s integrity. Safety measures were prioritized during the repairs, with construction nets used to ensure the safety of nearby vehicles and pedestrians amid heavy traffic around the clock tower.

With the completed repairs, the clock tower is expected to remain durable for at least another decade, providing reassurance to the community and visitors who value the heritage site.
