Communications Minister Stresses on Promotion of Factual and Responsible Journalism


Kathmandu: Minister for Information and Communications Dr. Bikram Timilsina has underscored the centrality of freedom of expression, press freedom, and citizens’ right to information as the communications sector evolves amid rapid technological advancements. Speaking at the 24th Conference of the Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), jointly organized by Public Service Broadcasting Nepal and the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB), the Minister emphasized the promotion of fact-based and credible journalism through the integration of artificial intelligence and digital platforms.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Timilsina reiterated the importance of preserving the fundamental norms and values related to information rights, expression, and press freedom, despite significant changes in information technology. He highlighted the media’s responsibility to deliver credible, impartial, and accountable news content, asserting that misinformation should not be countered with restrictive measures but through robust journalism.



The Minister noted the media’s critical role during crises and natural disasters, emphasizing the need for international cooperation in addressing challenges like AI, misinformation, and climate change. He pointed out that AI and digital platforms are reshaping the media landscape but should be seen as opportunities for transformation.



Dr. Timilsina also stressed the importance of connecting with younger audiences via digital platforms, ensuring that information and educational materials are effectively delivered. He maintained that modern technology cannot replace human editorial decisions and emphasized the responsibility of media organizations to maintain accuracy and public trust.



Highlighting Nepal’s pioneering role in community radio in South Asia, the Minister praised community radio’s impact in connecting diverse communities and providing crucial information during emergencies. He called for public service broadcasting to enhance its credibility and serve as a reliable source of accurate information.



The conference, attended by journalists and policymakers from around 40 countries, focuses on connecting public service broadcasting with the younger generation and integrating diverse voices into public broadcasting.
