Dhaka: A court here today placed former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Molla Nazrul Islam on a five-day remand in a case lodged over the attempt to murder a college student, Fahim Hossain Zubayer, during the July-August mass uprising.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand in the case. Molla Nazrul Islam, who previously served as the commissioner of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), was detained from the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, last night.

The case documents reveal that Fahim Hossain Zubayer, 20, participated in an anti-discrimination student rally in Gulshan on July 22, 2024. The rally was attacked, and many attendees, including Zubayer, were shot. His father, Md Humayun Kabir, subsequently filed the case with the Gulshan Police Station on October 5.
