Dhaka: Five leaders and activists of the Sramik League and the banned Chhatra League were sent to jail today after surrendering to the court in connection with a case filed during the July uprising. Senior District and Sessions Judge Shamsunnahar ordered their incarceration following their court appearance seeking bail.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the accused-Mahin Uddin, 25; Rasel alias Goda Rasel, 30; Suku alias Shukur Alam, 48; Ador Kashri, 20; and Raihan Kashri, 25-were involved in an extortion attempt on August 4, 2024, at a business establishment in Hajiganj East Bazar. When the establishment’s employees refused to pay, the accused allegedly attacked them, vandalized the shop, and looted valuables worth approximately Taka 15,876,710.
On August 20, Mizanur Rahman Selim, the owner of the business establishment, filed a case with Hajiganj Police Station. The case named 74 individuals and included 100 to 150 unnamed persons as accused. Earlier, on January 6, the High Court granted the accused a six-week ad interim bail.
