Police has arrested Md Mojnu, who was convicted
and sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a student of Dhaka University
(DU) in 2020, but escaped from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail
on August 6, 2024.
“Being tipped-off, a team of Khilkhet Police Station arrested Mojnu from
beside the rail tracks behind Kuratoli BRTC Bus Counter last night. He has
already been handed over to Cantonment Police Station,” Officer-in-Charge
(OC) of Khilkhet Police Station Md Azharul Islam told BSS.
Confirming the matter, Cantonment Police Station OC Abdul Alim said Mojnu had
been serving his sentence in Kashimpur High Security Central Jail but escaped
from the jail on August 6 and went into hiding.
The DU student was raped in the evening on January 5 and her father filed the
case with Cantonment Police Station the next day.
On January 7, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) managed to detain the culprit
Mojnu and the victim too later identified him. Mojnu also confessed to his
crimes and gave statement under sect
ion 164.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 on November 19,
2020, sentenced Mojnu to life imprisonment and fined him Taka 50 thousand in
a case lodged over the rape.
