Government Prioritizes Climate Change Projects to Enhance Adaptation Capacity


Kathmandu: Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, has emphasized the government’s dedication to developing climate change projects centered around national priorities. The announcement was made during the launch of the ‘Capacity Building and Strengthening System’ for the implementation of the integrated results management framework of the Green Climate Fund.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Thakuri highlighted the significance of national priority projects in boosting adaptation capacity against climate risks. He praised the National Trust for Nature Conservation for its contributions in mitigating climate change impacts and expressed hope that the Trust would continue to play a crucial role as a recognized body of the Green Climate Change and Adaptation Fund.



Minister Shahi also underscored the importance of aligning sustainable finance networks with national policies and projects, including nationally determined contributions, national adaptation projects, and sustainable strategies. He argued for the necessity of millions of dollars for the effective implementation of climate adaptation policies and projects, emphasizing the indispensable role of international collaboration and climate fund access.



Secretary at the Ministry, Dr. Dipak Kumar Kharal, stressed the importance of developing capacity in study, research, and technology based on science, rather than focusing solely on training and human resource development. He advocated for institutional and systemic capacity development to maximize benefits while developing projects.



Dr. Naresh Subedi, Member-Secretary of the National Trust for Nature Conservation, pledged to enhance stakeholder capacity and fulfill responsibilities to achieve desired outcomes. Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal, Chief of the Climate Change Management Division, highlighted the need for attention to national and international relations in project operations. Om Prakash Bhattarai, Chief of the International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division, emphasized the importance of increasing capacity to bring in ‘Green Climate Fund’-related projects to meet national needs efficiently.
