Govt Protects Press Freedom: Minister Gurung


Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has affirmed that the government will not undertake any action that could endanger press freedom. Minister Gurung made these remarks during a function organized to commemorate the 23rd establishment day of the Madhyanna national daily on Sunday.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung highlighted the significant efforts made by political parties to achieve loktantra, emphasizing that the government would refrain from engaging in activities that could threaten this democratic system. He further stated that Nepal’s ethnic and social harmony serves as an example to the world, and he expressed concerns about assaults on these aspects through social networks. To address this, the government has introduced a bill aimed at regulating social networking sites.



The Minister assured that the proposed bill would not compromise press freedom. He committed to amending any provisions within the bill that might pose such a risk. Furthermore, Minister Gurung emphasized the need to address irregularities in digital spheres and noted that the bill is crucial for maintaining the country’s religious harmony.



He also mentioned that the bill would be passed through democratic processes, reinforcing the government’s commitment to both press freedom and social harmony.
