Barishal: Shipping adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has announced that the interim government is committed to extending comprehensive support to the families of martyrs from the July-August uprising. This declaration was made during his visit to the native home of martyr Riaz, who lost his life during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the shipping adviser met with Riaz’s family to offer his condolences and provide financial assistance. He also took the opportunity to visit Riaz’s grave, where he offered prayers for the martyr’s eternal peace. The visit underscores the government’s commitment to honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the cause.
In addition to meeting the family, the adviser inaugurated a pantoon at Hizla Launch Ghat in Ghosher Char, naming it after Riaz as a tribute to his memory. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including BIWTA chairman Arif Ahmed Mostafa, director of port and transport Areef Uddin, Ch
ief Engineer Mahidul Islam, and Hizla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahangir Hossen.
Riaz, originally from Lakhipur village in Hizla upazila, Barishal district, was an honors final-year student at Barishal Muladi Degree College. He was also employed in a private organization in the capital. On August 4, 2024, during a protest rally in Jigatola, Riaz was shot in the head. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on August 17 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
