Health Ministry Issues Warning Against Tobacco Promotion During Festivals

Kathmandu: The Ministry of Health and Population has raised alarms over the advertising and promotion of tobacco products under the guise of cultural celebrations and festivals.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Ministry has observed the involvement of tobacco product producers in several cultural gatherings and festivals. In light of these findings, the Ministry has called for an immediate cessation of such activities.

Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki emphasized the provisions of the Tobacco Products (Control and Regulation) Act, 2068 BS (2011), which strictly prohibits the advertisement, promotion, or sponsorship of tobacco products in any form. This includes dissemination through various media channels such as newspapers, electronic media, interaction programs, signage, and more. Dr. Budhathoki reminded the public that violating these legal provisions carries penalties.

The Spokesperson further urged the public to avoid seeking sponsorships from tobacco manufacturers for public events, highlighting the detrimental effects of tobacco consumption on health, as well as its economic, social, and cultural implications.

Dr. Budhathoki expressed confidence that strict adherence to the Act, along with its regulations and directives, would help prevent tobacco-related diseases, reduce mortality rates, and enhance public health.

The Ministry also encourages individuals to report any violations of the Act to the ‘Hello Health Call Centre’ at 1115, operational from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, or through Viber and WhatsApp at 9851330592.
