Ljubljana:Twenty-one people have died due to natural disasters, including landslides, floods, and inundations, following heavy rainfall that began on Thursday across the country.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that five people are missing and five others have been injured as a result of these events. Additionally, 747 families have been directly affected by the floods and landslides.
The heavy rainfall, occurring since September 24, was caused by a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. In response, approximately 2,000 residents from affected districts were relocated to safer areas over the past four days. Local authorities, in coordination with district administration offices, have provided necessary lodging, food, and relief for those rescued.
Spokesperson Shanti Mahat stated that air rescues were conducted for individuals trapped in floods and landslides in several districts, including Jajarkot, Myagdi, and Baglung. The disaster resulted in the complete destruction of 143 houses and partial damage to 51 others.
To warn residents, the Flood Forecasting Division dispatched 814,000 SMS alerts to areas at risk of flooding, landslides, and inundations. Over the four-day period, more than 100 millimetres of rain was recorded at 186 stations nationwide. Dedhgaun in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) experienced the highest rainfall, measuring 544.2 millimetres, followed by Panchase in Kaski with 500.2 millimetres and Atraulitar in Tanahu with 472 millimetres.
