Inclusive Climate Action and Safe Migration Emphasized at Nepal Workshop

Siena:Speakers at a program have emphasized the importance of inclusive climate action that supports local adaptation efforts and facilitates safe migration. They argued that policies focused on gender equality are crucial in securing livelihoods for communities affected by climate change.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the event was organized by the Rural Oriented Youth Movement of Nepal (ROYM) and featured a national workshop on ‘climate change and its effects on downstream communities.’

Climate change expert Dr. Roji Joshi highlighted the importance of considering the human rights of disaster-affected individuals, such as social security and livelihood, in advancing climate adaptation strategies. She stressed that gender inclusion is key to enhancing climate resilience.

Dr. Joshi also noted that those who are landless, have low incomes, or work in the informal sector require additional support and attention in recovery efforts. She advocated for changes in agricultural practices to accommodate climate change impacts and emphasized the importance of effective early warning systems to minimize damage and loss of life.

Dr. Basanta Raj Regmi, chairman of the Disaster Management Network Nepal, remarked that the Bhotekoshi flood should not be seen merely as a natural disaster. He pointed out the long-term impacts on family incomes, the loss of local skills and knowledge, and the erosion of social relationships. Dr. Regmi further stated that Nepal has fallen behind in conducting research on the various aspects following the Bhotekoshi glacial disaster.
