Dhaka: Ireland is ready to extend necessary cooperation to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, stated Ireland’s non-resident ambassador to Bangladesh, Kevin Kelly, during his maiden courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain at the foreign ministry.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the envoy described the student-led mass uprising of July-August 2024 as historic. During their meeting, the ambassador praised Bangladesh for its efforts in sheltering forcibly displaced Rohingyas and reaffirmed Ireland’s support in seeking a sustainable solution to the crisis.
The Foreign Affairs Adviser expressed gratitude to the Irish government for its intended support and highlighted the reform initiatives of the Interim Government. He also sought Ireland’s active participation in the upcoming international conference on Rohingyas and stressed the need for international pressure on Myanmar to achieve a durable solution, considering the present conflicting situation there.
Hossain further requested the facilitation of visas for Bangladeshi students aspiring to pursue higher studies in Ireland. The discussions also included cooperation in trade, including GSP+, development, media freedom, and the next general elections in Bangladesh.
