Jahangir Urges Protection of Agricultural Land to Boost Agro Production

Dhaka: Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today emphasized the importance of protecting agricultural land to enhance agro production in the country, aiming to meet the demands of the growing population. He stressed the need for all institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture to prioritize safeguarding agricultural land when undertaking projects, avoiding any destruction of land for new establishments.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser highlighted the agricultural sector’s success since the country’s independence, noting that while land resources remain constant, the population is expected to rise. Therefore, increasing agricultural production is essential. He expressed these views during the inauguration of the newly constructed ‘Mrittika Bhaban’ of the Soil Resources Development Institute in the capital’s Farmgate area, where he served as the chief guest.

The adviser also addressed the need to reduce imports of agricultural products, such as oil, pulses, and chickpeas, by encouraging domestic cultivation efforts. He called on everyone to motivate farmers to grow these essential crops on their lands. Furthermore, he highlighted the significance of planting fruit trees in hilly regions and promoting forestation efforts.

Commenting on vegetable prices, the adviser explained that prices tend to rise during the transition between seasons. To address this, he mentioned the construction of low-capacity cold storages to preserve vegetables and fruits, aiming to stabilize market prices throughout the year.
