Kathmandu: Japan’s ambassador to Nepal, Maeda Toru, today paid a courtesy call on Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal. During the meeting held at the Minister’s office in Singha Durbar, the Minister congratulated the newly-appointed ambassador Maeda for assuming the office.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Dahal acknowledged Japan’s grants, loans, multilateral assistance, and technical support to Nepal for its infrastructure and human resources development, as well as contributions to environmental conservation and the development of health, education, and agriculture sectors. The Minister expressed gratitude for the support from the Japanese government, citizens, non-government organizations, and universities, particularly during natural disasters such as the 2015 earthquake. He emphasized that maintaining strong bilateral relations and cooperation with Japan remains a top priority for Nepal.
Minister Dahal also stated that Nepal is eager to learn from Japan’s experiences, knowledge, skills, and technologies in sectors such as infrastructure, industry, agriculture, and hydropower. The meeting included a reflection on past high-level visits between the two countries, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration.
The Minister encouraged Japanese investors to explore opportunities in Nepal, assuring them of the security of their investments. He noted that the year 2026 would mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan, a milestone that coincides with Nepal’s anticipated graduation from a least developed country to a middle-income developing nation. Additionally, Minister Dahal expressed appreciation for the scholarships provided to Nepal’s government officials each year under the Japan Development Scheme (JDS) and acknowledged the benefits Nepal has received from Japan’s Colombo Plan.
