Journalists Serve Fascist Regime for Self-Interest: Shafiqul

Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has criticized a faction of journalists for collaborating with a fascist regime for personal gain, manipulating facts, and crafting false narratives to legitimize violence. Addressing a discussion titled ‘Fascist Media Narratives: A Retrospective on July 1-36’ organized by ‘We Want a Fascist-Free Mass Media’ at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club, Alam highlighted the role of journalists in justifying authoritarian actions during significant political events since 2009.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam accused some journalists of acting as power brokers, particularly during the July uprisings and other key national political events over the last 15 years, serving the dictator in exchange for benefits. He criticized how political considerations rather than merit steered media appointments in the past regime, resulting in biased journalism serving government interests.

Alam called for a shift in Bangladesh’s media role, emphasizing the need for responsible and independent journalism focused on presenting facts and offering constructive criticism rather than praising political figures or government actions. He urged journalists to practice constructive criticism and highlighted the recent publication of articles praising Professor Yunus, stating the need for highlighting issues instead of praise.

During his address, Alam stressed the importance of rebuilding Bangladesh with contributions from all political parties and civil society. He envisions a country where diverse voices are heard, and no one feels silenced, as has been the case for the past 15 years. He also acknowledged the challenges journalists faced in the past and urged for a new beginning in journalism.

The event, chaired by platform convener Zainal Abedin Shishir, also featured speeches from Dhaka Journalists’ Union President Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Business Standard Chief Reporter Abbas Uddin Nayon, Bangladesh Islami Chatrashibir Publications Secretary Md Abu Shadik Kayem, and Dhaka University Journalist Association President Mohiuddin Muzhaid Mahi. Alam urged the media not to overlook significant events and failures of the past, emphasizing the importance of documenting events truthfully to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Spokesperson for the platform, Plabon Tarique, presented a key paper analyzing over 150 articles published between July 1-36 that legitimized autocratic narratives. Tarique highlighted how specific reports in newspapers like Kaler Kantho, Janakantha, and Bhorer Kagoj served to establish the fascist government’s agenda.
