Karnali: Maize occupies the highest production among all food grains produced in Karnali Province.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Province Government’s Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives reported that Karnali has produced the highest 258,876 metric tonnes of maize this year.
The Directorate of Agriculture under the Ministry revealed that maize is cultivated on 82,808 hectares of land in the province. After maize, wheat follows in terms of volume of production. Data from all 10 districts of the province indicates that wheat is cultivated on 71,769 hectares of land, yielding 151,990 metric tonnes last year.
According to Directorate’s Director Tilak Pandey, paddy production ranks third, with 146,679 metric tonnes produced last year, cultivated on 41,304 hectares of land in Karnali. Pandey noted that the province also produced 18,826 metric tonnes of millet, 9,709 metric tonnes of barley, and 2,633 metric tonnes of buckwheat, with millet and buckwheat primarily grown in the mountainous regions.
The Directorate specified that millet is cultivated on 13,704 hectares of land, while buckwheat is grown on 2,377 hectares, highlighting the agricultural diversity within Karnali Province.
