Karnali Province Promotes Organic Farming to Reduce Chemical Fertilizer Use

Karnali province: Karnali Province is actively promoting a campaign aimed at reducing the use of chemical fertilizers in farming, emphasizing the region’s suitability for organic practices. The provincial government has been committed to this initiative since 2075BS.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister for Agriculture, Binod Kumar Shah, highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts over the past seven years to advance organic farming. These efforts include distributing organic materials, promoting bio pesticides, and educating the public about the harmful effects of chemical pesticides. Additionally, farmer schools have been established with financial and technical support to further this cause.

Recently, an international-level training event on organic farming was organized in Birendranagar, Surkhet, by the Embassy of Thailand in Nepal in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This five-day training focused on enhancing non-chemical farming production, workforce management, product marketing, and sustainability.

During the event’s conclusion, Mansuvid Manasakul, the officiating chief of the Thai mission in Nepal, expressed that the joint training by the Thai Embassy, Nepal government, and FAO would strengthen Thai-Nepal relations and pave the way for further collaboration. He emphasized that organic farming not only sustains agriculture but also ensures food security and improves livelihoods while fostering environmental harmony.

Minister Shah acknowledged the challenges in organizing such an international event in Karnali but regarded its successful execution as a significant achievement. The training incorporated both theoretical and practical knowledge, essential for promoting sustainable agriculture.

The event was attended by government employees, agriculture traders, and operators, reflecting a collaborative effort to advance organic farming practices in the region.
