In the 63-year-old history of the National News Agency (RSS), it has recently launched a 24-hour news service, marking a significant stride.
The RSS had first started its service from a room of the private house at New Road and now operates through a well-equipped building at the heart of the federal capital. Since its inception, RSS is committed to diversifying its services.
The new 24-hour service, which began as a trial on August 27, has garnered positive feedback from media and journalism experts. According to RSS management, the current focus is on enhancing quality and diversifying services as per the sentiments of the Constitution. The service has commenced with the Nepali news.
Taranath Dahal, former President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), and former Chairman of RSS, praised RSS for demonstrating the continued relevance of news agency journalism by providing round-the-clock service.
“There is no deadline for news agency journalism. Its service should be open for round-the-clock. I
ts characteristic is prompt dissemination once the news is achieved,” he said.
“It is indeed a laudable and positive effort that the RSS decided to be upgraded to the 24-hour news service,” he added
He said the citizens’ access to prompt and credible services would be guaranteed if the RSS provided its quality and credible content to its subscribers on time. If this happens, it will surely contribute to raising public trust in news agency journalism and the entire journalism sector.
Another former FNJ Chair Mahendra Bista said it is commendable to disseminate regular news bulletin instead of the updated ones for the development of media in the changing time.
He hopes the RSS’s decision to launch the 24-hour service will contribute to further development of Nepali media. “Now media has been global and I extend best wishes to the RSS on the commencement of the 24-hour service. This will add a new dimension to media if it is sustained, effective, and systematic,” he added.
Another former President of FNJ Bi
shnu Nishthuri advised the RSS that it focused on both quality and quantity aspects for the sustainability of the services, acknowledging the RSS’s move to switch to the 24-hour service. He wants the RSS to also publish reports about its special and unique importance, centering on the guarantee of prompt, credible, and reliable content.
In addition to the Nepali, English, and international news bulletins which include features too, the RSS provides the photo service as its vital service, and audio-visual, opinion, and news on mother language, Abadhi, are the services the RSS is providing.
