Kathmandu: Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for an immediate cessation of the cable car construction in Pathibhara, citing that the project commenced against the wishes of the local community. During the Emergency Hour of the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting today, MPs urged the government to halt the construction to address the confrontation created by locals resisting the project.
According to National News Agency Nepal, MP Rajendra Prasad Lingden noted that Pathibhara has become contentious, highlighting that local desires were overlooked. He emphasized that community members should not be battling to serve a businessman’s interests. Meanwhile, MP Yogesh Bhattarai pointed out the rising tensions in the Pathibhara Mukumlung area of the Taplejung district over the cable car issue.
Lawmaker Toshima Karki advocated for resolving the cable car dispute peacefully through negotiations rather than force. Additionally, MP Madhav Sapkota raised concerns about Nepal’s placement on the ‘grey list’ for money laundering due to governance failures, criticizing the lack of action against misconduct in the National Sports Council.
Parliamentarian Tara Lama accused the local administration of injuring people while removing settlements in Beldandi, Kanchanpur, and demanded medical treatment for the injured and accountability for those responsible. MP Padam Giri expressed sorrow over the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal in Odisha, India, alleging she endured mental and physical distress without protection.
MP Ishwari Devi Nyupane addressed the debate over the former king’s statement on Republic Day’s eve, stating that any attack on the democratic republic is unacceptable. MP Rama Koirala reported issues with manpower companies illegally sending workers abroad, causing hardship for laborers.
MP Raghuji Pant remarked on partial resolutions following the KIIT University incident in Odisha, stressing the need for further intervention by Nepal’s Prime Minister and government. Lawmaker Mahesh Basnet urged the widening and safety improvements of the Mechi Highway due to rising accidents and vehicle traffic.
Lastly, MP Ramprakash Chaudhary demanded government compensation for damage caused by wild elephants terrorizing Sarlahi’s northern area, destroying banana and maize farms.
