Kathmandu: The government has announced the names of 45 individuals declared as martyrs following the September 8-9 Gen Z protest in the country. This decision was made public after the Home Ministry forwarded a proposal to recognize these individuals who lost their lives during the protest, which claimed over 72 lives, including demonstrators and inmates.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the list includes Buddhi Bahadur Tamang from Kirtipur municipality-2, Kathmandu, Ishwot Bahadur Adhikari from Kathmandu Metropolis-11, Santosh Bishwokarma from Belaka municipality of Udayapur, Sulav Shrestha and Ayush Thapa from Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolis-1 of Banke, among others. Shreeyam Chaulagain from Belbari municipality-11 of Morang, Gaurav Joshi from Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolis, Yog Bahadur Shrestha from Barhabise municipality-6, and Mahesh Mahat from Sangachowkgadhi municipality-8 of Sindhupalchok are also included.
The list further extends to individuals such as Ashab Alam Thakuri from Birgunj Metropolis-12, Sauran Kishor Shrestha from Baglung municipality-4, Subhas Kumar Bohara from Khaptadchhanna rural municipality-7, and Bhimraj Dhami from Durgathali rural municipality-1 of Bajhang. Rashik Khatiwada Khatri from Panauti municipality-10, Dil Narayan Tamang from Temal rural municipality-7 of Kavrepalanchok, and Binod Maharjan from Lalitpur Metropolis-7 are also recognized.
Other individuals acknowledged as martyrs include Yogendra Neupane from Golanjor rural municipality-1, Milan Ray from Dudhauli municipality-8, and Dipesh Sunuwar from Tinpatan rural municipality-6 of Sindhuli. The list continues with Chhatrman Kuthumi from Pakhribas municipality-2 of Dhunkuta, Ojhan Budha from Swamikartik Khapar rural municipality-2 of Bajura, among others. Notably, the list features several individuals from across various regions of the country, underscoring the widespread impact of the protests.
The Home Ministry has confirmed that Dev Kumar Subedi from Lalbandi municipality-5 of Sarlahi, Pravin Kulung from Silichong rural municipality-3 of Sankhuwasabha, Nikhita Gautam from Kalika municipality-8 of Chitwan, and many others have been honored with the martyr status. The recognition serves as a somber reminder of the events that transpired during the protests and the lives lost in pursuit of their cause.
