Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress (NC) has announced a three-day mourning period following the demise of its former central committee member and former minister, Dhundiraj Shastri. Shastri passed away on June 16 while receiving treatment at Kathmandu Medical College. He was 89 years old.
According to National News Agency Nepal, an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee was convened today to express profound sorrow over Shastri’s passing. The committee endorsed a condolence motion to honor his memory. In line with the party’s decision, the NC flag will be flown at half-mast across central, provincial, and district offices from June 18 to June 20. Moreover, all NC offices throughout the nation will remain closed on June 19.
The party plans to hold condolence assemblies on the 13th day following Shastri’s death across its offices to acknowledge his significant contributions to strengthening the party and advancing political transformation in Nepal. During the meeting, attendees observed a minute of silence to pray for eternal peace for Shastri’s soul.
Known for his dedication to democratic socialism, Shastri was a prominent figure in Nepali politics and a respected socialist thinker. A devoted follower of BP Koirala, he began his political journey as a student and played a vital role in Nepal’s democratic movements. His activism led to imprisonment and exile in India.
Born on Jeth 25, 1993 BS in Kimdanda, Arghakhanchi, Shastri was elected to the House of Representatives from Arghakhanchi Constituency-2 in the general elections of 2048 BS (1991) and 2051 BS (1994). The NC has paid tribute to his lifelong dedication, loyalty, and contributions to nationalism, democracy, and socialism.
In a statement released today, the NC recognized Shastri’s intellectual legacy, political experience, and key roles in shaping and strengthening the party organization. The party emphasized that his commitment and service to both the party and the nation will be remembered with high reverence.
