Kathmandu: General Secretaries of the major ruling coalition partner, the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign and pave the way for a national consensus.
According to National News Agency Nepal, in a joint statement issued today, the duo also called on ministers representing the party to leave the government, emphasizing that Prime Minister Oli’s resignation is necessary to facilitate the formation of a ‘new national consensus’.
The statement highlighted the ongoing concerns raised in party meetings, Parliament, and public forums about the government’s functioning. The General Secretaries criticized the lack of improvement in governance and accused the Prime Minister of ignoring necessary reforms. They attributed growing public dissatisfaction to the Prime Minister’s performance, specifically condemning the suppression of the ‘Gen Z’ youth protests, which demand anti-corruption measures, good governance, and the unblocking of social media.
Thapa and Sharma further noted that the seven-point agreement established during the government’s formation has lost its relevance. They urged party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to recall the party’s ministers from the Cabinet, warning that failure to do so would force them to consider alternative actions.
The General Secretaries also emphasized the importance of addressing the legitimate demands of the Gen Z movement and ensuring that protests remain peaceful and disciplined. Additionally, they called on all political parties to engage in open and constructive dialogue to collaboratively resolve the current political crisis.
