Dhulabari: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has called on former king Gyanendra Shah to participate in the electoral process if he wishes to change the current political system. Addressing a programme organized by the Nepali Congress in Dhulabari, Jhapa, Sharma suggested that the former king should contest the upcoming general elections in 2084 BS, using the Crown as his election symbol, to enact change through a democratic mandate.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Sharma emphasized the necessity of securing a two-thirds majority to alter the current system, highlighting that elections are the only legitimate means for such a transformation. He cautioned against any attempts to instigate instability in the country, underscoring the importance of adhering to democratic processes.
Sharma further remarked on the historical context, noting that the federal republic was established by the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA). He pointed out that efforts by pro-monarchists to challenge the CA’s decision through non-democratic means would not succeed. “The only way to alter the CA decision is to formally amend the constitution. For this to do, a two-third majority vote is compulsory,” Sharma stated, reinforcing the importance of constitutional processes in enacting significant political changes.
