Nepal and China Set to Sign MoU on Comprehensive Connectivity Network.


Kathmandu: Nepal and China have expressed their readiness to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishing the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network and the Framework for Belt and Road Cooperation. This agreement aims to strengthen connectivity in various sectors, including ports, roads, railways, aviation, power grids, and telecommunication, with the goal of transforming Nepal from a land-locked to a land-linked country.

According to National News Agency Nepal, this announcement was made in a Joint Statement following the conclusion of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s four-day official visit to China. Both nations have agreed to advance projects such as the fourth phase of the China-aided Araniko Highway maintenance, the Hilsa-Simikot Road project, and the second phase of the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project.

The leaders also acknowledged the signing of Letters of Exchange for the China-aid Project of Feasibility Study for the Tokha-Chhahare Tunnel. Furthermore, both sides
committed to expediting the repair and construction of the Syaphrubesi-Rasuwagadhi Highway to enhance connectivity between the two countries.

The joint statement highlights the intention to ensure timely implementation of agreements and decisions, as well as the completion of ongoing programs, projects, and activities. Additionally, both parties aim to synergize their development strategies for deeper Belt and Road cooperation and expedite the construction of the Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali Economic Corridors.

Nepal and China have also agreed to improve the development of entry ports, facilitate customs clearance and travel, and enhance bilateral economic and trade cooperation. The smooth operation of multiple ports and the resumption of 14 traditional China-Nepal border trade points by 2024 were applauded, as these efforts promote trade and improve the livelihoods of border residents.

The Nepali side has requested China to consider opening more bilateral and international ports, and China has agreed to fa
cilitate the construction of an Inland Clearance Depot and Integrated Check Post at Korala, Mustang. Both nations have expressed willingness to advance the feasibility study of the Jilong/Keyrung-Kathmandu Cross-Border Railway, with plans to hold the 9th Working Meeting on China-Nepal Railway Cooperation.

The joint statement also emphasizes the importance of civil aviation ties, encouraging the establishment of air routes between Chinese and Nepali cities to facilitate economic and trade ties. Nepal has requested China to expedite the development of Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology and the construction of a sports stadium in Damak, Jhapa, and Amargadhi City Hall Complex in Dadeldhura.

Both countries are committed to further enhancing pragmatic cooperation in various sectors, including economy, trade, infrastructure, agriculture, health, disaster relief, and poverty alleviation. The signing of the MoU on Trade Promotion Cooperation and the potential development of the China-Nepal Friendshi
p Industrial Park were also discussed, with China reiterating its support for Chinese enterprises investing in Nepal.

Nepal expressed appreciation for China’s zero-tariff treatment on 100 percent tariff lines for Nepal, and China welcomed the expansion of Nepali agricultural exports. The two sides aim to expand cooperation in poverty alleviation, health, and medical services, with plans to establish a CAR-T cell laboratory in Kathmandu for cancer treatment.

Both nations reaffirmed their support for each other’s core interests, with Nepal reiterating its commitment to the one-China principle and China supporting Nepal’s sovereignty and development path. The joint statement underscores the importance of law enforcement cooperation and cultural exchanges, with plans for various cultural and tourism events to strengthen ties between the two peoples.

The visit of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to China is seen as a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations, with both sides expressing satisfaction with the
outcomes and a shared vision for future cooperation. The leaders of both nations have agreed to maintain high-level exchanges and communication to further solidify their partnership.
