Nepal Expands Foreign Nationals Management Information System Nationwide

Nagarkot:The Department of Immigration (DoI) has implemented its Foreign Nationals Management Information System (FNMIS) across the entire country to monitor and manage the activities of foreign nationals in Nepal. This system was initially rolled out in the Kathmandu Valley on January 1, 2025.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the FNMIS aims to gather detailed information on the whereabouts and activities of foreign nationals until their departure from Nepal. Shiva Lamsal, a director with the department, emphasized the system’s role in tracking foreign nationals, many of whom have been found involved in criminal activities.

The system records show that 459 foreign nationals were deported in 2025, and 540 were deported from January 1 to October 10, 2026, for legal violations. Specifically, 64 individuals were deported in 2025 for staying beyond their entry permits and breaking immigration laws, while 61 faced similar actions by October 2026.

Director Lamsal highlighted that the FNMIS aims to enhance the security of foreign visitors, facilitate information sharing, control crime, and boost tourism. The system provides the capability to track which hotels foreign nationals use, their travel destinations, and their compliance with entry permit regulations.

Amardeep Sunuwar, another department director, noted that the system allows various service providers, including hotels, airlines, and travel agencies, to directly input information into the department’s system, ensuring comprehensive data collection and security management.
