Nay Pyi Taw: The government of Nepal has donated 27 tons of relief materials to Myanmar, responding to the devastation caused by a recent earthquake. The relief package was handed over at Nay Pyi Taw International Airport by a Nepali delegation.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the handover took place on Thursday morning, with Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari, Chief of the South East Asia at the Foreign Ministry, revealing details of the operation. The relief materials consist of food items, daily essentials, medicines, and health supplies, aimed at aiding the affected population.
The event was attended by Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar Harish Chandra Ghimire and various Myanmar officials. A brief discussion was held between the representatives of the two countries, focusing on the immediate needs and future cooperation.
The Nepali delegation included 16 members, comprising officials from the Foreign Ministry and media personnel. During the meeting, Joint Secretary Adhikari expressed condolences for the lives lost and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. He also recalled Myanmar’s assistance to Nepal during the 2015 earthquake, emphasizing the importance of mutual support.
In his remarks, Adhikari highlighted the collaboration between Nepal’s government and private sector in providing assistance to Myanmar. He expressed hope that such cooperation would strengthen bilateral relations.
Myanmar official Heu Wai Lwin expressed gratitude for Nepal’s support, mentioning that the earthquake resulted in over 3,590 fatalities, 4,800 injuries, and 148 missing persons. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.7, struck the country on March 28.
Additionally, an umbrella organization of Nepalis in Myanmar has been offering shelter to approximately 250 Nepalis affected by the disaster. Furthermore, a medical team from the Nepali Army has been actively providing emergency medical services, treating over 1,300 people in the affected areas.
