Nepali MP Elected to IPU Sustainable Development Committee


Tashkent: National Assembly member Dr. Anjan Shakya has been elected to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Standing Committee on Sustainable Development. She was elected to represent Nepal from the Asia-Pacific region during the IPU’s 150th assembly held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. Speaker Devraj Ghimire is leading the Nepali delegation to the assembly, which began on April 5 and will continue until April 9.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Shakya defeated candidates from the Maldives and Iran to become the first-ever MP from Nepal to be elected to the Committee. In her comments following the victory, MP Shakya expressed that her election has contributed to enhancing Nepal’s prestige on the international stage. MP Shakya is a member of the Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly and serves as the coordinator of the Sustainable Development Sub-Committee of the same committee.



The IPU Committee on Sustainable Development aims to improve the lives and well-being of the world’s citizens and the planet. It addresses issues such as fair trade, environmental protection, and financing for development, along with other questions that influence the evolution of our world, as stated on the IPU’s official website.
