KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced that the Nepali women’s football team, which secured second place in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship 2024, will soon receive a government-promised cash prize following the Tihar festival.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s support for sports and athletes, affirming the commitment to reward the women’s team for their silver medal achievement. Each team member is set to receive Rs 300,000 as part of this incentive.
Despite a commendable performance, the Nepali team faced defeat in the final match against Bangladesh due to technical errors. Prime Minister Oli encouraged the players to aim for victory in the next Championship, drawing inspiration from Tenzing Norgay’s perseverance in his successful ascent of Mt Everest on the eighth attempt.
During the event, Prime Minister Oli disclosed that the government is in the process of identifying a suitable location for constructing
a stadium with a capacity of 50,000 people. Additionally, he mentioned the recent removal of taxes on prize amounts, further supporting athletes.
The announcement was made at a program attended by Minister for Youth and Sports, Tejulal Chaudhary, Kathmandu metropolis deputy mayor Sunita Dangol, and All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) President Pankaj Bikram Nembang, among others.
