Kathmandu: Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mahabir Pun, has announced that new programmes are being introduced in the science and technology sector to retain the youth within the country by fostering an environment conducive to innovation.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Pun made these remarks while responding to queries during the discussion on the ‘Appropriation Bill, 2083’ in the National Assembly meeting. He highlighted that the establishment of a separate ministry for science and technology, after prolonged efforts, marks a significant step forward. He noted that the budget allocation for this sector is witnessing an increase, a crucial factor in stopping the trend of youths seeking opportunities abroad.
Minister Pun explained that his entry into politics was driven by the previous government’s lack of emphasis on science and technology. He revealed that one per cent of the capital expenditure, amounting to Rs 4 billion, has been allocated to the ministry. Furthermore, he is encouraging provinces and local levels to allocate a similar percentage of their capital expenditure to science and technology.
He also mentioned that the ministry is preparing to formulate rules and laws and undertake an organization and management survey. The Bill related to the National Forensic Lab is currently under consideration, and there are plans to increase the budget for the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology. Pun emphasized the importance of increasing investment in the science and technology sector for the country’s prosperity and expressed his commitment to bringing back scientists and learned individuals currently abroad.
