Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to show seriousness in fixing the problems surfaced in prisons across the country. Issuing a press statement today, NHRC’s spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel highlighted the security challenges that have increased following incidents where prisoners escaped from jails and weapons looted from the police have not yet been recovered.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the statement emphasized the necessity for the government to implement serious measures to resolve the security issues that have arisen after the Gen Z Uprising. The NHRC noted a budget deficit for reconstructing physical structures damaged during the Uprising, as well as a lack of essential materials for detainees in prisons. The human rights commission has strongly urged the government to address these pressing issues within the prison system.
The NHRC conducted monitoring of the status of prisons within the Kathmandu Valley in the aftermath of the Gen Z Uprising on November 13-14. In addition, the Commission has initiated the monitoring of detention centers outside the Valley through its province and province section offices, reflecting a comprehensive approach to addressing the nationwide prison challenges.
