Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged citizens to exercise their right to freedom of expression and demonstration peacefully while advocating for their demands.
According to National News Agency Nepal, NHRC’s statement comes in anticipation of scheduled demonstrations by political parties in the Socialist Front and pro-monarchist groups. NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel emphasized the importance of adhering to the constitution and both national and international laws concerning freedom of expression and speech. The NHRC has called on both factions to ensure their demonstrations remain peaceful and respect the rights of others.
The NHRC also appealed to the government and security agencies to prioritize human rights while maintaining law and order, keeping in mind the potential consequences of the demonstrations. The commission has engaged in discussions with chief district officers from Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts, the Chief of Kathmandu Police, and representatives from the Human Rights Cell of Nepal Police to address the law and order situation in Kathmandu Valley.
NHRC Chair Tapa Bahadur Magar instructed officials and stakeholders to uphold human rights principles while managing law and order. Additionally, the NHRC plans to monitor Friday’s demonstrations in the Capital City to ensure compliance with these principles.
