Dhaka: Adviser to the Interim Government Mahfuj Alam today declared that the Awami League (AL) will not be permitted to participate in the upcoming general election, citing concerns that their involvement could lead to a resurgence of fascism in the nation’s politics. Addressing a meeting at Hajiganj upazila, Alam emphasized his government’s firm stance against allowing AL to contest the elections.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj Alam reflected on historical events, stating, “On this day in 1975, Sheikh Mujib established BAKSAL and attempted to thwart all democratic movements in Bangladesh.” He elaborated on the alleged past actions of the Awami League, claiming that prior to BAKSAL’s establishment, thousands of opposition leaders were forced to disappear.
Alam also accused the Awami League of numerous human rights abuses during its rule, including enforced disappearances, murders, and sexual violence. “At that time, thousands of people were forcibly disappeared, murdered and women were raped by the Awami League men,” he asserted. He expressed a resolute desire to prevent the return of Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina’s rule in Bangladesh.
He further reiterated the interim government’s commitment to prosecuting those responsible for past atrocities, reforming institutions compromised during Hasina’s regime, and ensuring a fair electoral process for a democratic transition. Highlighting the need for institutional reform, Alam remarked that without these changes, the country would remain plagued by discrimination.
He mentioned that discussions with political parties and stakeholders are planned, based on reform commission reports, to outline necessary institutional reforms. This, he believes, is crucial for holding a democratic election and successfully transitioning power.
Earlier in the day, Mahfuj Alam was enthusiastically welcomed at Hajiganj-Shahrasti by leaders of the Nagorik Committee, Anti-discrimination Student Movement, Islamic Andolon, and various community members. His visit will continue with a civic reception at Ramganj Government College ground in Lakshmipur, where he is the chief guest.
