Nothing to Be Panicked of HMPV, Should Remain Alert, Says BSMMU VC

Dhaka: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Shahinul Alam today emphasized the importance of staying alert rather than panicking about the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), an established virus. He reassured the public of the university’s preparedness in terms of testing and treatment for HMPV, while also stressing the need for basic hygiene practices like handwashing and mask usage.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Dr Md Shahinul Alam made these comments during a special seminar organized by the Internal Medicine Department at BSMMU, where he was the chief guest. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about HMPV and the necessary precautions to control its spread.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) of BSMMU, Prof Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, who addressed the seminar as a special guest, reiterated the importance of vigilance, particularly for those with compromised immunity. He emphasized that while there is no immediate cause for alarm, caution is imperative.

The event was presided over by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, who underscored the significance of public awareness in tackling the virus effectively. Prof Dr. Sohel Mahmud Arafat from the Internal Medicine Department presented the keynote paper during the seminar.

Additionally, Prof Dr. MA Mannan, Chairman of the Neonatal Medicine Department, addressed concerns regarding breastfeeding, assuring that mothers infected with HMPV can safely breastfeed their children without any issues.
