Paddy Yield Expected to Decrease by Five Percent This Year

Kathmandu: Paddy production is expected to decrease by five percent as a result of the damage caused to the agricultural sector due to the rains this year. The production of rice is projected to decrease based on the analysis carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, which was informed by data showing a loss of Rs 3.55 billion in the agriculture and livestock sector across the country due to the rains.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Information Officer of the Ministry, Mahananda Joshi, stated that out of the 5 million 955 thousand metric tonnes of rice produced last year, it is estimated there will be a shortfall of 3 percent, amounting to about 300 thousand metric tonnes. Joshi noted that the impact of climate change has caused significant damage to the agricultural sector due to disasters such as floods, rains, and soil erosion. Despite an initial estimate of more than 6 million metric tons of rice production, the ministry acknowledged the paddy production target was missed due to crop damage.

Due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms, farmers have faced substantial losses. Predictions indicate a decrease in paddy production, attributed to water-logging and rain affecting large quantities of harvested paddy intended for drying in the sun. Information Officer Joshi highlighted that although the Meteorological Department had informed about possible rainfall in advance, and the Ministry advised farmers to harvest paddy only after weather conditions improved, the warnings did not prevent losses in time.

The Ministry has been providing assistance to farmers in the form of fertilizers, bio-business, technology, and technical seeds to support the agricultural sector amidst these challenges.
