Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has emphasized the need to consider the feasibility of inter-constituency voting. During a meeting with stakeholders at her office in Singha Durbar, she highlighted the importance of granting voting rights to Nepalis residing abroad. She noted that political parties and candidates often face financial burdens when transporting voters from urban areas to their respective constituencies, which can lead to corruption. To address this issue, she called for a meaningful initiative.
According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Karki expressed concerns regarding the traditional election methods, which she believes fail to inspire Generation Z. She advocated for innovative approaches to send a positive message. “Let’s establish a system,” she proposed, while stressing that political consensus and thorough preparation from all parties are crucial. She acknowledged the digital literacy of the younger generation, urging political leaders to recognize this shift.
The meeting included Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, officials from the Home Ministry, Law Ministry, Policy Research Institute, and the Department of National ID and Civil Registration. A presentation was given on the research conducted by the Policy Research Institute, focusing on the feasibility of granting voting rights to Nepalis living abroad.
Home Minister Aryal remarked that the government is under pressure to innovate beyond past election practices. “It is an election government. So, past mistakes should be corrected and moved forward accordingly,” he stated. As a result of the discussion, a study team comprising representatives from various ministries, the election commission, and the research institute has been established.
