Kathmandu: The Election Commission (EC) has embarked on initial preparatory activities following the announcement of the election scheduled for March 5, 2026, which coincides with the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR). The EC initiated the preliminary steps by cancelling all previously planned programs related to the HoR member by-election in Rupandehi constituency-3, which was originally set for November 2.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Commission’s spokesperson, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, confirmed that formal consultations with the government have begun, alongside other logistical preparations and planning efforts following the election announcement. Newly-appointed Minister for Finance, Rameshwor Khanal, has already declared a budget revision to allocate the necessary financial resources for the upcoming election.
The political landscape witnessed a significant change when President Ramchandra Paudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the Prime Minister, after former PM KP Sharma Oli resigned amid the Gen Z protests on September 8-9. Acting on Prime Minister Karki’s recommendation, President Paudel dissolved the HoR on September 12 and scheduled the election for March 5 of the following year.
